Aluminum vs. steel curtain wall framing compared: weight, cost per m2, corrosion resistance, and structural limits explained by facade engineers.

A modular building system is a construction method — not a single product — in which a building is engineered and fabricated in factory-built sections called modules, then transported and assembled on a prepared foundation on-site. It's fundamentally different from a manufactured (HUD-code) home, which is built to a separate federal standard rather than the same local International Building Code (IBC) or International سكني Code (IRC) requirements that apply to modular construction and to conventional site-built structures.

Curtain glazing is the method of hanging large, non-structural glass panels on a building's exterior skin using a supporting frame rather than a load-bearing wall. Getting the terminology straight matters before anything gets specified: "curtain glazing," "curtain wall," "structural glazing," and "window wall" get used interchangeably in RFPs and product catalogs, but they describe different attachment methods, fabrication approaches, and cost or schedule trade-offs. Mixing them up is how a bid ends up priced for stick-built field labor when the design actually assumed factory-glazed unitized units — a mismatch that surfaces as a change order mid-project.

Building height and project budget decide which facade system is even viable before aesthetics enter the conversation. A 40-story tower, a 6-story apartment block, and a single-story retail strip each call for a different structural approach to glazing — and the structural glazing vs curtain wall decision (curtain glazing vs structural glazing, in UK usage), curtain wall vs window wall, or curtain wall vs storefront glazing, is usually settled by height and budget before aesthetics. Getting the system wrong at the schematic stage turns into a change order later, not a line item on a comparison sheet.

A decorative metal panel is a fabricated sheet of aluminum, steel, or stainless steel that's been laser-cut, perforated, embossed, or stamped into a pattern for visual effect rather than pure load-bearing strength. The metal itself supplies the aesthetic — the cutout, punched, or textured surface does the job that paint or fabric would do in another material. Decorative aluminum panels are typically fabricated in 1.5mm to 3mm gauges: thinner sheets (around 1.5mm–2mm) suit interior accents where weight and cost matter more than wind resistance, while 2.5mm–3mm gauges are common on exterior screens and facade accents that need to resist wind load and rougher handling. In practice, panels show up as free-standing screens, wall-mounted accents, infill for railings and fences, ceiling grilles, and cladding elements on building exteriors.

Aluminum as a construction material has moved from a rare, costly metal to one of the most widely specified building materials in the world — lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and fully recyclable, which is why aluminum in construction is increasingly treated as a sustainable construction material rather than a premium one. The aluminum building material properties that matter most — density, corrosion behavior, stiffness, and recyclability — are covered below. Architects and engineers specify it primarily for weight savings and corrosion resistance, not for stiffness — a distinction that shapes where it fits in a building and where it doesn't. Building and construction now absorbs roughly a quarter of global aluminum demand, covering everything from window frames to curtain wall skins on high-rises.
